ADVANCER Kiln ShelvesîFull Octagon (8 sided) 15" X 15" X 5/16" Advancer kiln shelf for top loading 10-sided kilns. Light as a feather, Stronger than any other shelf Imitated but never equaled, ADVANCERî kiln shelves are thin, lightweight kiln shelves made from an advanced nitride-bonded silicon carbide composition. ADVANCER kiln shelves are 19 times stronger, and weigh 50% less than conventional 1 thick cordierite kiln shelves and are made flat to stay flat so theres no warping even after many firings under heavy loads. Advanced nitride-bonded silicon carbide (NSiC) is distinguished from conventional nitride-bonded silicon carbide in that it is significantly stronger, thinner and much more resistant to oxidation; suitable for temperatures up to 2600ðF! ADVANCER kiln shelves possess excellent thermal properties. Low mass and high thermal conductivity result in shorter firing cycles helping potters to save energy, improve productivity and reduce overall firing costs. Also, at only 5/16 thick, for every 5 layers of shelves you save 3-3/8 of stacking height compared to conventional 1" shelves. That can add another shelf layer for every firing! ADVANCER kiln shelves exhibit outstanding performance in a variety of applications and firing atmospheres. ADVANCER kiln shelves are used in the studio production of commercial and manufactured clay bodies including low fired white ware, tile, stoneware and porcelain. Versatile in Many ApplicationsGas-Fired Kilns: ADVANCERî kiln shelves are most widely used in gas fired oxidation and reduction kilns. The use of ADVANCER kiln shelves has been proven to increase productivity and save money in hobby, production studio and industrial applications. Soda Firing: ADVANCERî kiln shelves are a smart choice for soda firing where soda is introduced indirectly (not by direct spraying onto shelves). The extremely low porosity of the shelves allows for soda drips to be easily removed by scraping without the time consuming grinding typically associated with conventional cordierite or silicon carbide shelves. Wood Firing: ADVANCERî kiln shelves have been used successfully in second and third chambers of wood-fired kilns. A combination of ADVANCER kiln shelves and conventional silicon carbide shelves is often a sound kiln furniture system in areas where direct flame impingement and temperature uniformity is a problem. Other sizes available. Please call for availability. WARNING - Storing and Drying Requirements for ADVANCERî Refractory Components ADVANCERî (silicon nitride-bonded silicon carbide) refractory components should be stored in a dry, enclosed area. ADVANCERî refractory components exposed to prolonged moisture penetration may result in catastrophic failure (i.e., steam explosion) during any rapid heat-up process of the kiln. Accordingly, do not expose ADVANCERî refractory components to any prolonged moisture source including rain, snow, condensation, etc. The application of kiln washes and coatings on ADVANCERî refractory components is an acceptable practice and is not considered a source of prolonged moisture. If any ADVANCERî refractory components are exposed to prolonged moisture, the product must be completely dried before it is used at temperatures exceeding 212úF (100úC). As a general guideline for the drying of ADVANCERî refractory components, the product must be held slightly above the boiling point of water for a sufficient length of time to expel any moisture and as much steam as possible. The following is a recommended drying cycle for ADVANCERî refractory components exposed to prolonged moisture. 1. Heat from ambient to 210úF (99úC) at a rate of 50úF (28úC)/hour. 2. Slow heating rate to 25úF (14oC)/hour to 230úF (110úC). 3. Hold at 230úF (110úC) for 12 hours ensuring that the entire load has reached the soak temperature before the timing of the soak has begun. 4. Raise temperature to 350-500úF (177-260úC) at a rate of 100úF (56oC)/hour. 5. Hold soak temperature for 16 hours ensuring that the entire load has reached the soak temperature before the timing of the soak has begun. 6. Cool naturally/slowly by turning off the heating source.
