Kala Stein: Overglaze Decals and Underglaze Transfers: New Ways to Decorate Ceramics
Overglaze Decals and Underglaze Transfers:
New Ways to Decorate Ceramics
with Kala Stein
Saturday November 4; 1:00pm - 5:30pm
This workshop will dive deep into overglaze and underglaze decals and will start with the fundamentals for those new to the technique. More advanced, experimental approaches will also be demonstrated and discussed to explore the broader possibilities of working with patterns and color. Kala will demonstrate her approach to using photographic and gold decals on readymade ceramics as well as tile and pottery. She will share how to design and outsource custom decals for your work, and part of the participant kit includes decals she had made in Jingdezhen, China (the porcelain capital of the world). Additionally, Kala will lead experimental slab building exercises using underglaze decals which will be applied directly to wet clay slabs, the transfers are generously provided by Elan Transfers.
Best practices for liquid luster application will also be taught, but cannot be a class activity because of safety hazards.
