Paragon TnF-24 / TnF-24-3 Ceramic Kiln

During busy seasons when orders are backlogged, you will be grateful you own a dependable Paragon kiln such as the digital TnF-24. Studio owners call these kilns “real work horses.”

Paragon studio kilns have withstood years of abuse in school environments. High school ceramics teachers fire these kilns unmercifully, without remorse. Yet the kilns keep going. People swear by them.

Hinged at the bottom, the switch box on 8, 10 & 12 sided digital Paragon kilns opens forward for easy maintenance. A folding support arm holds the box in the open position. The Sentry is mounted at the top of the switch box within easy reach. Operate it from a comfortable position.

The TnF-24 features sectional construction. Separate the kiln bottom and sections to repair bricks, change elements, or to move the kiln down narrow stairwells or through the narrowest doorways. Twist-lock spring latches hold the assembled collars securely.

The top row of brick in the TnF-24 is 2” high and without element grooves. It is less susceptible to damage during loading than a grooved brick.

Choose a wall thickness:

  • The TnF-24 comes in standard 2 ½” thick walls and lid. Since the TnF-24 studio kiln uses 2 ½” wall brick, we recommend it for low-fire ware, not for porcelain and stoneware.
  • The TnF-24-3 walls, lid and bottom are 3” thick. Best for Cone 10 porcelain or stoneware. Order the TnF-24-3, rated to 2350°F. The 3" thick version is 7.10 CU.FT. interior space. Slightly smaller then the 2 1/2 thick wall version. You will need slightly smaller kiln shelves for this model.

The massive lid is easy to lift with Paragon's patented “LiteLid,” which does away with cumbersome pulleys and cords and reduces lid weight to only several pounds of pressure. Most people can lift the lid with one hand. Unlike pulleys and weights, the LiteLid is self-contained on the kiln. No need to drill holes in the ceiling for pulleys. The LiteLid sharply reduces wear between the lid and top rim of firebrick. The truss and floating lid allow expansion of the lid. Ask competitors if their lid spring includes a truss and floating lid.

The 24” wide stand for 10 & 12-sided kilns supports the brick bottom with framing that is 4 ½” wide across the top of each side. The stand is rock-steady, with 16-gauge frame and heavy 12-gauge legs.

If you move your TnF-24 kiln out of the way when not in use, order an optional deluxe kiln stand with steel casters.

Something to consider if you already own a 12-sided kiln: Why purchase a 10-sided kiln such as the TnF-24 when you produce enough ware to fill a 12-sided kiln? It is because some ware fires more efficiently in a 10-sided kiln. Example: 10- and 12-sided kilns both fire four 10” wide bowls per shelf. When you own both sizes of kilns, you can choose the most efficient kiln for each size of ware. The 10-sided kiln is a good choice for those whose production depends on short firing cycles. Since 10-sided kilns are smaller than 12-sided, they can heat and cool faster. The 10-sided shelves are lighter than the 12-sided, and easier to lift.

A heavy galvanized steel base covers the reversible brick bottom completely. It folds up under the stainless case on all sides to strengthen the firing chamber. This is one more assurance that your Paragon kiln is built to last.

You will be amazed at the convenience of digital firing. The reliable solid-state Sentry controller continually monitors the firing so you can spend your time productively without closely watching the kiln. (Please remember, however, to check the kiln during firing and to monitor it near the expected shutoff time.) The sealed touch pad keeps out dust and is easy to wipe clean.

The controller has powerful features that you will enjoy using. Yet we have also worked hard to make the controller user-friendly.

Do you ever wonder how much electricity your kiln uses? The digital controller can figure this for you with the press of a button. Find out how little a kiln actually costs to fire. Learn to conserve energy by experimenting with firing speed, load density, etc.

Optional Type-S Thermocouple Option

Optional Type-S premium-grade thermocouple for 2 1/2" - 3" wall kilns. Ideal for firings above cone 4. It is extremely long lasting even at stoneware temperatures. Note: If ordered separately and added later, make sure to select the correct thermocouple type under Options on your Sentry controller.

Optional Mercury Relays

Order your new kiln with the mercury relay upgrade, which is a single TF-15 mercury relay. The mercury relay is quiet and reliable. The life of a mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles. Mercury relays outlast the standard mechanical relays and are available as an option on new kilns.

VentMaster Venting Option

KILNVENT MASTER 120V M9 VENT MASTER (Installed after the kiln is set up) The patented Orton Vent Master not only vents fumes but also improves firing results.

Auto Cone (kiln-sitter) Safety Backup Option

The Auto-Cone is an optional factory-installed safety backup for digital kilns. It comes without the Limit Timer. The Auto-Cone is housed in a separate box on the side of the kiln. The price shown below is for the Auto-Cone backup ordered for a new digital kiln.

The Auto-Cone operates the same as the earlier Dawson Kiln Sitter. Mount a small cone on the cone supports. Since the Auto-Cone is a safety backup, the cone should be one to two cones hotter than the programmed firing. Thus, the digital controller can still turn off the kiln at the proper time.

Orton improved the basic Kiln Sitter design. The Auto-Cone uses a more durable metal in the sensing rod and cone supports that withstands high temperatures better than stainless steel. They also chrome-plated the swivel parts to help resist corrosion. Each Auto-Cone comes with a screwdriver, allen wrenches, and a downloadable operating manual.

Even though a kiln is equipped with the Auto-Cone backup shut-off, you should still monitor the kiln from time to time during operation. We cannot guarantee a kiln against overfiring.

Lid Safety Switch Option

The optional lid safety switch turns off power to the heating elements when the lid is raised. The controller remains powered. The switch turns the power to the elements back on when the lid is closed. The switch mounts to the back of the lid.

3 Zone Control Option

Improve temperature uniformity. The standard digital Paragon kiln is single zone; 3-zone is a factory-installed option that controls temperature from 3 separate locations in the kiln.

The Optional Furniture Kit

The furniture kit consists of carefully selected fireclay shelves and posts for this particular model. When estimating the price of the kiln, include the cost of furniture. The furniture allows you to stack multiple layers of ware. Without it, you could fire only the ware that would fit on the kiln bottom.

Recommended furniture kit for the Paragon TnF-24 includes:

8 C-22H 1/2 Shelves (21” round x 3/4” half)

1” wide Square Posts, 8 of each - 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5”, 6” lengths

1 lb. Bag Kiln Wash
