Underglazes
Underglaze colors are a versatile medium for decorating ceramic pieces. They have a similar consistency to paint, and can be mixed to create a wide range of colors. They can be fired at any temperature, but will achieve their brightest and most vibrant results at lower temperatures like Cone 04. Unlike glazes, underglazes do not contain glass, so when used alone they can have a matte, "unfinished" texture. To achieve a glossy finish, simply apply an appropriate clear glaze on top. Underglaze can be applied to both greenware and bisqueware, and can be used both under and on top of glaze, making it a flexible decorating medium for the ceramic artist.
