Leslies Happy Engobes are a line of opaque colors designed for beginners, schools, institutions and professional artists. The engobes should be applied to damp or dry greenware. After bisque firing, apply two coats of clear or satin matt glaze and fire to cone 06-05. Engobes can also be used as a slip and applied to wet or dry clay to change the color of a clay body. The age old process of painting white engobe (slip) over a red terracotta or dark body clay to change the clay body color works well when using the sgrafitto decorative technique of scratching through the surface to reveal the clay beneath. Although Happy Engobes are designed for low fire applications, most colors can be fired in either electric or gas kilns up to cone 10. Left side of tile shown with clear glaze.
